World Potential (SWEDEN)
Country Brief
Sweden is situated between latitudes 55 and 69 degrees north.
Its maximum length is 1575 km and its maximum breadth 500
km. The total area is 450 000 W and thus Sweden is one of
the largest countries in Europe. However, it is sparsely populated
and the number of inhabitants is less than nine million. About
half of the area is covered by forest and about one quarter
consists of mountains. Sweden has more than 100 000 lakes
covering roughly 10% of its area. There are many rivers, of
which thirteen have a mean annual flow of more than 100 m3/s
at the mouth. Sweden is a highly industrialized country and
the great majority of the population is occupied in industry,
service and commerce. Only about 5% of the economically active
population is occupied in agriculture. The main industries
are wood, paper, pulp, mining, manufacturing and construction.
Many of the industries are based on indigenous raw material
and have a rather large energy demand. As the climate is harsh
there is also a great need of energy for heating. Of the total
energy requirement today, about 43% has to be imported as
fuel oil. The rest of the requirement is supplied by hydro
power (15%), sulphate and sulphite lyes, waste wood etc. (18%),
nuclear power (15%), coal and coke (6%).
Hydro power as the main source of electricity has been one
of the cornerstones of Swedish industrialization. This relatively
inexpensive indigenous resource has contributed in a most
significant way to the development of industries capable of
competing on the world market.
