World Potential (AUSTRALIA)
Though the country experiences great variation in moisture
levels and streamflow conditions, hydropower development
in Australia has been an important factor in the country’s
social and economic development. The Australian hydropower
industry operates with a total installed capacity of 7261MW,
with an average of 14 568GWh generated annually. Each
region of the country has very different levels of production
and potential of hydropower, each with individual regulations
and power demands. Through a series of reforms intended
to privatize the industry, the current trend in Australia’s
power industry is a shift from state sponsored projects
to private development. Privatization has been supported
in an effort to reduce the demand on central governments
financial resources and to foster competition. Energy
assets, including power plants, are among the largest
of the state-owned assets moving into the private sector.
As a result, private power companies are finding increased
investment opportunities in Australia’s growing power
market.
