Microhydro project wins "Energy Globe
2001"
ITDG South Asia's microhydro project
has won the "Energy Globe 2001" award, the world award for
sustainable energy for the year 2001, recently.
The project has provided electricity
to 2562 households (approximately 12810 individuals) through
its 75 schemes by August 2000. The new approach called "Electricity
Consumer Societies (ECS)" has enabled a rapid uptake of
micro-hydro in Sri Lanka. Consisting of prospective village
electricity consumers, including women, the ECS has planned,
constructed and maintained the micro-hydro schemes in remote
villages. With the funds of ECSs developed through regular
tariffs paid monthly to the Society by beneficiaries, ECSs
ventured into other village development activities as well,
including road construction, loans for income generation
and aiding at village funerals in member families.
