India can provide consultancy services in the following areas of small hydro power:

• Planning, investigation and Hydro resource survey.
• Engineering designs for construction of Small hydro power projects.
• Techno- economic analysis of SHP including renovation of old small hydro power plants.
• Preparation of Pre-feasibility Reports, Feasibility Reports and Detailed Project Reports for Small hydro power projects.
• Planning, execution and renovation of old power plants.
• Preparation of tender documents for small hydro power projects. Design, manufacturing and installation of Improved Water mills (Gharats).
• Development of electronic equipment/ instruments required for small hydro power industries.
• Development of software packages for computer based design and drawing of civil structure for SHP stations.
• Design and development of drainage system

Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources in the year 1982 set-up an Alternate Hydro Energy Centre (AHEC) at University of Roorkee to promote power generation through the development of small hydro and other renewable energy sources. This Centre also provides project design, development and consultancy services.
